Methyl Vinyl Ketone

Methyl Vinyl Ketone – But-3-en-2-one, Vinyl methyl ketone, Butenon, Methylene acetone, 3-Buten-2-one, 2-Butenone, Butenone, metyl vinyl ketone, Buten-2-one, MVK, 1-Buten-3-one

Methyl Vinyl Ketone, a colorless liquid that has a pungent smell, is called Methyl Vinyl Ketone. It is used to synthesize plastics, steroids, and Vitamin A. Methyl Vinyl Ketone is listed on the Hazardous Substance List due to its citation by DOT and DEP as well as NFPA, EPA.

There are two ways to prepare methyl vinyl ketones: industrially and in a laboratory. It is made industrially by condensing acetone with formaldehyde and then drying to obtain good yields. The final distillation ability determines the purity of industrial processes.

Solubility: Sol water, methanol and ethanol; slightly sol hydrocarbons. Forms binary azeotropes with water, at bp 75 degrees Celsius (12% water). Clear liquid with 0.1% acetic and 0.05% to 1% hydroquinone.

Methyl vinyl ketone appears as a clear, colorless liquid with an unpleasant odor. Flash point 20°F. May polymerize under heat or contamination. Water is less dense than it. Inhalation can make it extremely toxic. Burns the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes.
